Unlike some types of citrus fruit, grapefruit can  interfere with the metabolization of certain drugs, inadvertently increasing their concentration to potentially toxic levels. Bipolar drugs are not the only ones affected. Also on the no-fly list are medications used to treat everything from  high cholesterol and arrhythmia to allergies and HIV. Even Viagra is complicated by the otherwise healthy effects of grapefruit. Which Medications Interact With Grapefruit Juice? How Grapefruit Interferes With Drug Concentration A number of psychotropic drugs, including those used treat anxiety, depression, and psychosis, are among the 80 agents grapefruit juice is known to interfere with. Forty-three of those drugs had serious adverse effects.?? This is because grapefruit contains furanocoumarins, an organic compound which blocks an enzyme that normally breaks down certain medications. While other citrus fruits like pomelos, limes, and Seville oranges also contain furanocoumarins, they havent been studied as closely.?? When this enzyme is blocked, the drug concentration levels in the  blood will be higher than expected. In some cases, the intended effect and/or side effects of the drug will be strongerâ€"even dangerous. Degrees and Persistence of Effect The degree by which grapefruit can affect certain drugs can vary. For some medications, one small glass of juice can result in what would be equivalent to a double or triple dose. For example, as much as 99 percent of BuSpar (buspirone) is normally metabolized before the drug enters the bloodstream. When taken with grapefruit juice, the concentration can increase by as much as 400 percent. Or, as demonstrated in this research, four-fold.?? At the same time, the effects of grapefruit can be long-lasting, interacting with certain drugs anywhere from several hours to a few days after ingestion. Alternately, you can avoid grapefruit altogether and substitute with (non-Seville) orange juice.   Any drug that will interact with grapefruit with have all of these defining elements: it will be taken orally, it will have very low to intermediate absolute bioavailability, and also it will be metabolized by the cytochrome P450 3A4 enzyme (CYP3A4). Grapefruit and some of the related citrus can irreversibly inhibit that enzyme. Such drugs should not be eaten with grapefruit or any of the related citrus, or alternative medications should be prescribed. Although it is probably purely speculative to suggest who the most vulnerable patient would likely be, people over 45 years old are the prime purchasers of grapefruit and receive the most prescriptions for drugs.?? List of Psychotropic Medications Affected by Grapefruit All told, there are over a dozen drugs commonly used to treat symptoms of bipolar disorder that are known to be affected, in differing degrees, by grapefruit. Masculinity in Alias Grace - Literature Essay Samples

Margaret Atwood’s Alias Grace presents masculinity through several characters throughout the book. In the majority of these cases, the men are portrayed as untrustworthy or dependent on a woman. A few characters that allow the reader to understand Atwood’s relationship and opinion of men include Dr. Simon Jordan, Jeremiah the Peddler, James McDermott, Thomas Kinnear, and Jamie Walsh. Each of these characters represents a consistent idea about men and their interest in women and the development of their own reputation and masculinity. Atwood uses several different â€Å"types† of men in order to show the reader how they each have a common trait. A general idea that remains consistent throughout the book is the attitude of men that women are objects that are merely there for sexual exploitation. Grace is often sexually harassed by the prison guards who may assert suggestive advances such as â€Å"let’s just nip up the side alley, into a back stable, down on the hay, it won’t take long if you lie still†¦Ã¢â‚¬  (240). Mary Whitney, even after her wise teachings to be extremely cautious when it comes to men, ends up seduced by her employer’s son. She may have truly believed his promises of a future because of the ring he gifted but as soon as Mary revealed her pregnancy, he gave her some money for an abortion and deserted her. She later dies of the procedure, leaving a traumatizing mark on Grace. Nancy experiences similar circumstances. She was used sexually by Mr. Kinnear, her employer, and later moved in as his mistress. After Grace moved in and Nancy was pregnant, Mr. Kinnear began taking an intere st in Grace, leaving Nancy similarly deserted. Dr. Simon Jordan was an essential character in Alias Grace. He took a professional interest in Grace due to her unique situation and his curiosity in psychology. He wanted to study her reactions and memories in order to determine whether or not she was guilty. He visited her several times in order for her to respond to several fruits and vegetables he brought in, and for her to tell him her life story so he could analyze her reactions. By surrounding himself with this one subject for an extended period of time, his mind began to wander and resulted in sexual fantasies. At one point in the book his landlady, Ms. Humphrey, makes advances on him. He believes he is dreaming which he has done in the past but later he â€Å"[realizes] he’s not dreaming; or not dreaming the woman. She’s really here, in the flesh, lying motionless beside him in the suddenly too quiet bed, arms at her sides like an effigy; but she is not Grace Marks. Impossible now to mistake her boniness, her bird’s ribcage, her smell of singed linen and camphor and violets. The opium taste of her mouth. It’s his thin landlady, whose first name he doesn’t even know.†(352). This marks the beginning stages of Dr. Jordan’s descent into a mental breakdown, proving to the reader that not only Grace cannot be trusted, but Dr. Simon Jordan as well. Dr. Jordan’s mental state is not helped by the visit he takes to Grace’s lawyer, Mr. Mackenzie. After learning the intricate tactics of manipulation and fabrication that criminals have been known to use, Dr. Jordan no longer trusts any of the observations and conclusions he has drawn. Atwood uses Dr. Jordan to show that men are driven by their sexual desire, and this allows them to be left open to manipulation and doubt of their own findings. Jeremiah the Peddler is a mysterious character that makes several appearances throughout the course of Alias Grace. He has always been nice to Grace and even sold her some items when she first began working. When he later finds her at Mr. Kinnear’s residence, he offers that â€Å"You could travel with me, he said. You could be a medical clairvoyant; I would teach you how and instruct you in what to say, and put you into the trances. †¦ I said, wouldn’t that be a deception and a cheat? And Jeremiah said, no more than at the theatre.†(268). This comes back into play later in the book when Grace is asked to undergo hypnotism by a professional. This â€Å"professional† is later revealed to be Jeremiah himself, under a new name. Atwood presents Jeremiah as an attractive and cunning young man that takes a friendly interest in Grace. She reveals early on that he may not be the most trustworthy and that he uses tricks and deceptions to make a living. This sol idifies Atwood’s skeptical portrayal of male intentions in Alias Grace. James McDermott is a tricky character to analyze due to the unreliable nature of the narrator. On one hand, McDermott may be a manipulative colleague of Grace’s that kills Mr. Kinnear and Nancy simply because of how they have treated him. This would make McDermott the one who manipulated Grace. On the other hand, McDermott may have been the one manipulated by Grace. By seducing him, she may have been able to convince him to help her murder their employers. The second theory may not have been as plausible in the eyes of society in their time simply because it was not common for a woman to have such control over a man. It may, however, not have been as difficult as one would have thought for a woman to manipulate a man into doing her dirty work because †Clearly the prospect of spending time with and being in physical if not sexual contact with a woman had a great appeal to the multitude of men†(Belshaw). Atwood later reveals in an interview her awareness that in a ca se of a woman and a man being guilty of a man, the man is always guilty and the woman is either a poor victim or it was an equally agreed upon deal. Atwood may use this ambiguity to either enforce her position that men are manipulative, or she may use this to bring the reader’s attention to the fact that men are not the only ones that have this ability. Thomas Kinnear is once again an excellent example of men’s sexual desire for the â€Å"wrong† women. As was earlier noted, Dr. Jordan ended up falling for and lusting the idea of being with a celebrated murderess like Grace Marks. Nancy was originally employed as a housekeeper in Mr. Kinnear’s household, but Mr. Kinnear soon took an interest in her and eventually Nancy moved in not only as an employee but also as Mr. Kinnear’s mistress. This is frowned upon by the village and society as a whole. After Grace was hired, Mr. Kinnear took a subtle interest in her without making dramatic advances. Soon after Grace’s employment, Nancy gets pregnant which is around the time Mr. Kinnear takes a greater interest in Grace. This is a pattern in the book. When a woman gets pregnant, they are immediately less attractive in the eyes of the man. We learn much later in the book that Grace and Mr. Kinnear had been seeing each other in the week leading up to the murd er. These were characterized as periods of amnesia in Grace’s mind, but are later under hypnosis revealed to have been pursued by her â€Å"alternate personality.† These events allow the reader to identify Mr. Kinnear as a nice man that is, once again, driven by his sexual desires. Reflecting Dr. Jordan’s, they are both interested by the perhaps unorthodox relationships that were slightly rebellious and edgy for their time. â€Å"All of the Atlantic colonies sought to punish â€Å"fornication† (heterosexual relations outside of marriage) and adultery†(Belshaw), which led the other members of the society to dislike the Kinnear residence, and may have led them to dislike Grace simply by assuming her involvement. As Nancy was becoming more and more rejected by Mr. Kinnear in place of Grace, she became more irritable in the direction of Grace and McDermott. This enforces the 19th century ideal that â€Å"a woman’s identity and property always c onnected with the men in her life.†(Gender and Sexuality in Colonial America). Atwood uses Mr. Kinnear as a character to show the true effect that sexual desire can have on a man and how it does not necessarily matter who it is with. This reinforces her elaborate construction of men as sexual creatures, giving no mention to the personalities of the men themselves. This goes to show that Atwood is not trying to portray men as an actual human being with love and affectionate traits, but rather as goal driven and somewhat cold. Jamie Walsh was a young boy who took an interest in Grace when she moved into the Kinnear residence. He was portrayed as very young in the book, although the age difference was a mere three years. On Grace’s birthday Jamie chats with Grace and admits his affection toward her. She tells him he is too young but allows him a kiss on the cheek. At the end of the book, after Grace is released, he proposes to her and they end up in a good relationship. Grace admits it may not have been her dream marriage, but given the circumstances it was fine. An annoying circumstance to Grace, however, was that â€Å"every once in a while Mr. Walsh becomes very sad; he takes hold of my hand and gazes at me with the tears in his eyes, and he says, To think of all the sufferings I have caused you.†(456). This shows that men can also be needy for attention or in this case also forgiveness. This may once again factor into sexual fantasies Jamie allows himself to create. He may like the idea of him controlling her fate as â€Å"He likes to think it was him that was the author of all, and I believe he would claim the death of my poor mother too, if he could think of a way to do it. He likes to think picture the sufferings as well, and nothing will do but that I have to tell him some story about being in the Penitentiary, or else the Lunatic Asylum in Toronto†¦ He begs me to tell him yet more.† (456). Jamie Walsh is Atwood’s attempt at introducing a character that is believed to be a good and normal guy that is sensitive to women, but still incorporating that aspect of sexual drive that haunts every male character in the book. Atwood seems to present a sort of mistrust for those of the opposite sex by presenting them as untrustworthy, perfidious, and deceitful. She also repeatedly enforces the idea that men are sexual creatures that see sexual dominance as a confirmation of their masculinity. Men in the 18th century had to be especially dominant as this was when masculinity in the modern society was beginning to be defined. Men were expected to be strong and powerful and in many cases, sexually dominant. An additional factor in the male quest to prove themselves as masculine, is the development of open homosexuality in the community. Homosexuality was not yet accepted at that time so more and more people became subject to the question of how much of a man they may be. The development of masculinity and the development of feminism in this era were almost contradictory as we see in the novel. Grace and Mary are early feminists that do not want to be controlled, harassed, or manipulated by men, as was common in that era. This is mainly due to the fact that unlike fifty years ago when the country was split just black and white, there are now more races involved. Granted, the generations now are much more knowledgeable about the ethic differences, most don’t see any harm in a person judged based on their skin color. Take for instance in week five’s reading; the hate that was betrayed against Asian Americans in the radio show where over two dozen Asian Americans were physically injured, thirteen of which had to go to the hospital because their African American classmates decided to fight. However that is not the worst part of that situation. Instead of the security guards and teachers doing something to stop the hate, they let it continue. And this is in every race. Many people in today’s day and age tend to pick more on the Latino groups of America. This is mainly due to the fact that a lot of them are not in the United States legally. Included in these races are people of Mexican, Puerto Rican, and Venezuelan heritage. The main reason for many of these immigrants to come to the United States is to receive a better life. But with this immigration mainly fail to assimilate properly to their local neighborhoods to live the American way. By assimilating in the United States one is able to adopt the cultural traits and/or identity of the host group, Americans, and/or integrate into the primary networks and secondary organizations of the host group.  (Feagin and Feagin) While coming into the country illegally the Latino race automatically puts a bad taste in most American’s mouths because on top of them coming into the country without proper paperwork, they take away jobs that could be used for other Americans simply because Latinos are known for taking a lower pay so that they may be paid in cash verses check based on the simple fact that they do not have proper documentation to be working in the United States. According to Milton Gordon, author of the influential Assimilation in American Life, there are many problems with assimilation. This though involved mainly European groups coming into the United States that they were not willing to adjust to the living styles of another country. This being the main problem of immigrants is that they will not forego racial difference to fit into the country. Gordon suggested that this will be the main problem with America in the future. There are many people of these races that live in the United States legally that are hardworking and want to the properly the American way. These are the kind of people though that end up getting left in the dust because not many realize that some people want to be a part of the country to that extend. These Latin Americans have fully comprehended the concept of acculturation, or cultural assimilation, which is the change of one group’s important cultural patterns to those of the host or dominant group. (Feagin and Feagin) This doesn’t mean though that Latin Americans, or any race, have to give up their entire cultural habits. It simply means that they understand that they came into a different country and they respect the fact that some things culturally are done differently. For instance there were many situations brought up in the video on 60 Minutes regarding the American Canal. Americans see that canal as a water source for their vegetables in the winter, however those from Mexico see it as a dangerous way into the United States. This is of course a problem between the two races because the Americans don’t feel they need to alter the safety  of the canal so that Mexicans don’t continue to keep drowning in the water in attempts to get into the country illegally. Asian Americans have a huge burden on them just like the Latino races but it’s not as much as being considered â€Å"illegal†. Their pressure is more of an educational outlook. They are expected to excel in school and get great grades at high education at the best colleges. Some of this plays into their benefit though considering the life they will be able to live by better educating themselves. They are pressured with these expectations through their own families though too. For instance it is assumed that if a Caucasian American meets an Asian American while they are at school, such as college, it may be assumed that the Asian American is good at math. It might not be verbally said, but as Americans that is a trait that Asian Americans have always had. This is a trait though that does not , and should not, be given up with trying to fit into the American way of life. If anything a trait like this only enhances living in America. Take for instance the breakdown of educations in America. Asian-Indian Americans lead the country when it comes to obtaining a Bachelor’s degree from college with 70.1%, Chinese Americans follow with 52. 1%; Filipino Americans 48%, Vietnamese Americans at 27. 8%, Asian-Indian Americans with 70. 1%, and White Americans with 30. 7%. Feagin, Pearson) Even according to Gordon, the transition of Asian Americans into the United States society is a lot easier that other races and it has a lot to do with their ability to want to learn and help not only their culture and people but the society of people in which they surround themselves. A study shows that in 1979 2. 6 percent of students admitted into Brown University were of Asian descent. In 1993 however, it jumped to 14. 8 percent of the students accepted. Many researchers though such as James Madore of the Christian Science Monitor label Asian Americans as â€Å"model minorities†. However they still have their troubles. For instance the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association (NAPABA) argued with U. S. Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas for his use of the term â€Å"model minority† when describing Asian Americans. Thomas argued that Asian Americans â€Å"transcended the ravages caused even by harsh legal and social discrimination† and should not be beneficiaries of government affirmative action because they are â€Å"overrepresented in key institutions. † (Page339: , Racial and Ethnic Relations Census Update, Ninth Edition, 9E by Clairece Booher R Feagin and Joe R.  Feagin, Pearson) The term â€Å"model minority† can be taken as a good or bad quality as explained in the above paragraphs it is all a matter of who is saying it and in what context they are using the title. But it expresses the fact that Asian Americans still face hard consequences in the United States based on assimilation and acculturation because even though some of their traits from their own heritage are beneficial to Americans, Americans then feel offended that someone is coming into the country trying to take over schools and education. It is hard to be an immigrant in the United States and that is understood by a lot of people in the country. But at the same time Americans want to keep their reputation of living the American dream with excellent jobs and families that love and support each other with the right to stick up for what they believe in and the will to pursue their dreams in whatever they wish. It is the some groups of Americans that have backed down to the immigrants of the country and have been belittled by those  assimilating into the United States. It is these Americans that create the hate in the country against entire races verses individuals. It is the lack of education on Americans that plays into part of the frustration of the country. No one notices those trying to do things the correct way but that may be because there are so many immigrants in the country that are illegal and take advantage of the fact that they don’t have to do anything to stay in the country. But this is not â€Å"Living the American Dream†. Immigrants that are taking advantage of any state’s aid, or not agreeing to file proper documentation to become a citizen to receive a paycheck instead of a lower pay but being paid in cash are a huge part of the problem. Taxes play into this just as much. Immigrants to America are not stupid. America taxes everything and everyone is required to pay them. Not everyone does though. Having many other races enter the country in this day and age gives those of this generation a clue to what happened many years ago when whites and blacks were ordered to stay separated. There are still parts of the country that blacks are not welcomed and they are discriminated against. It is almost as if no laws were overturned. Today there are still about eleven states in the country without a street dedicated to Martin Luther King Junior, and some states say they do not plan on including that street in the maps anytime soon. With racial issues almost always a battle it is almost near impossible to say that everyone one day will be entirely happy and created equal. The battle between White Americans against Asian Americans against Latino Americans and African Americans seems to be a never ending battle. In his research, Gordon believe that â€Å"the integration of African Americans into the core economy and society is well under way†. Feagin, Pearson)This indicates simply that the full migration of different races, though thought to be fixed many years ago, still has many small details to be drawn out. Every person whom goes to school learns about the horrible way that African Americans were treated before any slavery laws were abolished. It is a part of any history class at an early age. Every child in America should be able to answer simple questions such as what was Jim Crow segregation. Could this be that years down the road history is repeating itself only with another race, which race will it be? Will it be all of them? Will it be illegal immigrants? African Americans though were willing to fight for what they believed they had a right to, they stood up and protected themselves and many dies fighting for what they believe in, which is the exact way that Americans are known to live their lives. That quality in itself is one of the most solid reasons as to why African Americans are treated equally in America now as opposed to having different drinking fountains and bathrooms and having to sit in the back of the bus. Many of the challenges facing African Americans today are more subtle and involve a struggle that is more within the African American community than without. Many of these challenges involve fighting negative stereotypes that were born from hip hop videos or the misuse of power and authority by well-known figures in the African American community. The struggle involves pushing against institutional barriers that have been strengthened by those in favor of maintaining a historical precedent or the status quo. For example, it oftentimes seems easier for city leaders to support the new school district that educates the suburban community rather than funding the struggling inner city schools. And simply because an organization has never had an African American leader, does not mean that it never should. Finally, the struggle involves a continued determination to resist an apathetic attitude toward the problems in the African American community. In many instances, it is not the opinionated few who determine the overall outcome, but the indifference of the majority who are usually directly affected by the decision that they fail to be a part of. Discrimination is described as the actions carried out by members of dominant groups, or their representatives, that have a differential and harmful effect on member of subordinate racial or ethnic groups. Since times of racial issues the word discrimination can be used for other things also. Many people even in the year 2013 are being discriminated for physical or mental differences too. There is so much hate in the United States yet and many people are not aware of it. Discrimination due to skin tone, physical or mental differences can have long tern effects on a person and often cause, like in the Asian cultures, attempts at suicide.
